Profile of ASIF

Introduction:
Associate Social Improvement Foundation (ASIF) is a local women initiated, women led, women managed and women, orphan, old women, disables and child development NGO. It was established in 1997 with the initiation of a group of educated like minded social workers of Pirojpur District under the leadership Md. Nijamaul Huq a well known woman Social worker with long experience in social work, with an aim to promote the socio-economic and cultural status of the rural and urban poor and vulnerable people, emphasising the women, disables, old women, orphans and children through conscientization, capacity building, institution building, capital formation, and imparting felt-need based problem solving programs by adopting modern scientific technologies. ASIF believes in non-directive, bottom up, participatory and integrated development frameworks and acts as a catalyst with its beneficiaries.

6.         Working Areas:
ASIF has been covered 7 slums and 140 villages of 15 Unions of Pirojpur Sadar, Zianagar and Nazirpur Upazillas of Pirojpur District, which is situated at the stream south of the country and adjacent to the Bay of Bengal, a coastal area, which 310 km from Dhaka Capital City, a coastal remote, hardship communicated, underprivileged and under served area, where live the poorest of the poor people, who are deprived of the basic rights and basic needs..

7.         Bank Account Operation:
The mother Bank Account of the organisation is operated by the joint signatures of the Chairperson, Secretary and the Treasurer of the organisation with the help of approved EC meeting resolution and the approved money is transferred to the project accounts as per the approved budget. The project accounts are operated by the joint signatures of the Chairperson, Accountant and the Coordinator.

9.         Vision:
Established and empowered poor and vulnerable rural and urban people, emphasising the women, girls, disables, children and orphan children in the society.

10.       Mission Statement:
To establish the poor and vulnerable people, emphasising the women, girls, disables, children, old women and orphan children in the society through making them aware, sheltering, providing basic needs, capable, self-reliant, and self-initiators through building capacity, institutions, capital, utilization of local resources and imparting felt-need based problem solving programs involving necessary skilled, trained, experienced and qualified personnel.

11.       Approach and strategy:
ASIF emphasises on bottom up, participatory and integrated development framework basing target group development approach but it also implement activities following community-based approaches in special cases. It mainly emphasis the fullest participation of the people in every development effort and initiatives and also joint venture project for the people’s development.

a)     To arrange basic needs for the poor and helpless old aged people.
b)     To arrange basic needs for the helpless orphan children.
c)     To build capacity of the poor organised members, especially the women, disables, children, old women and orphan children,

15.       Work Experience:

a)     Conscientization:
Conscientization is the most and important program of the organisation. It begins from the start and continues continuously for raising mass awareness in all respects among the targeted people and the community people. So, far it has been conscientize approximately 245,000 people in different respects. Now the community people of ASIF’s working areas are fairly conscious in all respects and they can understand their development should be done themselves. In this regards, ASIF arranges personal contacts, door step visits, group meetings, gatherings, seminars, workshops, folk songs, popular theatres, circulate posters, leaflets, stickers, charts, billboards, sign boards etc. for easy realization and understanding from practical learning and also the community people can see, read and learn from those displays and functions..

b)     Motivation and Institution building:
The organisation first selects the working areas, conducts base line surveys and identify the targeted beneficiaries. After identification, motivate and educate the targeted people on the goal and objectives of the organisation and activities. When the beneficiaries realises that they should be organised, then the staff members organise them into small savings groups and conduct weekly meetings and collect weekly savings to build capital of the poor beneficiaries. So far approximately 3250 targeted people have been organised into approximately 161 savings groups and their accumulated savings size is Tk.19,50,000/-, which is being revolved for undertaking income generating activities by the group members.

c)     Education:
Education is the first and for most component of ASIF’s development interventions. So, it makes aware the women and makes literate. In these respects, it runs children education and adult education activities in the project areas. So far it has been made literate and socially aware 2650 adult women and 790 children and also developed school going habit.

d)     Health/Hygiene.
Health and Hygiene is a on going program of the organisation, which was started in 2000 and all the field are covered with this program, because, through weekly group meetings all the community people and the group members are made aware on health and hygiene.

e)    HIV/AIDS/STD Prevention:
At present time HIV/AIDS/STD has become a very alarming issue in Bangladesh, especially in the boarder areas of India, because, HIV/AIDS is transmitting from India in Bangladesh. So, the organisation has been educating and motivating the rural and urban people and urban people about HIV/AIDS/STD. Already the people of the working areas have become aware about the seriousness of the diseases, so, they are trying to practice HIV/AIDS/STD education. In this regard, posturing and wide circulation have been conducted in the working areas. The staffs continuously educating and motivating the people on HIV/AIDS/ STD diseases.

f)       Training.
ASIF emphasis on different kinds of training to the group members for their skills development and potentials upgrading and started from 2000. It is a continuous process. So far 2250 group members and 39 staffs and volunteers have been provided different kinds of training with the support of the above donors.

g)   Occupational Skill Development Training:
The organisation arranges occupational skills development training for the destitute women and the adolescent girls from 2000 and so far 3180 destitute women and 540 adolescent girls have been provided skills development training courses on Tailoring and Embroidery. Most of them have been involved in tailoring and embroidery activities.  

h)      Awareness Raising.
Awareness raising is a very important support for all the programs and also group formation, because, still the poor women of the north are not well aware, as modern light of the civilization has not reached among them. ASIF has been made socially aware approximately 245,000 people in its working areas. The above mentioned different donors support this program.

i)       Women Torturing prevention and WID/Gender.
ASIF has no separate program on WID but it mainly emphasises on women development. So, about 95% of its beneficiaries are women, disables, children and aborigines. All the programs of the organisation are planned, implement and manage by the women beneficiaries. It always emphasises on gender sensitivity in all its programs, so, in every case, gender response is given highest priority and try to make gender balance. At present in maximum cases and steps, gender balance has been maintained. It is cite able here that about 90% program are implemented for the women. These programs are supported by the above mentioned donors. It has been working on prevention of women torturing and oppression.

j)       Environment Development and Social Afforestation:
ASIF has especial program on environment development. So, it has been implementing nursery development, homestead plantation, community plantation, awareness raising, reducing chemical use, fertiliser use, developing composts, regenerative agriculture, reducing plastic use etc. activities with the support of different above mentioned donors. So far it has planted 7,400 saplings, 5000 homestead gardens, and developed 21 nurseries from where plants are supplied to the community people.

            k)   Homestead Gardening:
Every house has some space, which are fallen vacant and fallow. So, ASIF has taken step to utilise those fallow homestead spaces. The group members have been motivated and encouraged to utilise those fallow homesteads for vegetable gardening. In this regard, most the women members have been provided necessary training and other supports. So far 500 women were provided supports like training, seeds, seedlings, capital etc. and they have established 70 homestead gardens with vegetable. Other women have encouraged and established homestead gardens. 


l)       Adolescent development program:
ASIF has been working for the poor adolescent girls of the working areas for their life development since its inception. Already a good number of adolescent girls have become aware and skilled about their lives. The program has become accepted highly and need is increasing. Due to limitation it cannot increase the program.  So, we need supports from all concerns.

            m)  Disability development:
The staff members have been working on disability development with the support of CDD and supported 65 disable children and people. Already it has developed one CHDRP and 1 Social Communicator with the help of CDD, who have been working with the identified disable children and people of the areas.

16.       Organisational Set-up/Management:
An Executive Committee (EC) consisting of 7 (seven) members that includes 1 chairperson, 1 vice-chairperson, 1 general secretary, 1 asstt. secretary, 1 Treasurer, and 2 Executive Members, who are elected by 28 General Committee for a period of two years. The EC works as the supreme policy making body and controls the management of the Society. The Executive Director works as the general secretary and responsible for overall management of the organization. ASIF possesses limited number but potential staffs of both social and technical background that possess excellent expertise and long experience in rights based programs. They are skilled in program management, networking and partnership dealings with different stakeholders including Local NGOs and govt. departments, donor agencies etc. The staffs have also adequate knowledge and experience in conducting social and technical researches. ASIF has now partner NGOs who are well equipped in implementing various programs efficiently integration with other programs.
